Florida Fishing - Saltwater and Freshwater Fishing Capitol of the World
By Joshua Killingsworth
Home of the some of the best fishing in all of America is Florida and more specifically, southwest Florida. Both saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing offer something for every fishing enthusiast out there. Whether you are there for relaxation while fishing for catfish, or in it for the adventure and rush of catching a prize marlin, your Florida fishing trip may be the best yet.
Southwest Florida offers the best in backwater fishing. For those who are unfamiliar with backwater fishing, also known as backcountry fishing, it is fishing in the vast networks of tidal creeks, bays, and mangrove islands that occupy the region. Saltwater fish are attracted by the acres of oyster beds, sea grass beds and miles of shorelines that occupy the area. Inhabiting these local waters are the state's most hunted game fish, the snook, the tarpon, the redfish and the spotted sea trout. Thousands of angler visit Florida every year trying to catch all four types of fish in a day, also known as a Grand Slam.
Possibly the most important factor helping the wonderful fishing reputation of the region are the ample tracks of saltwater and freshwater wetlands that are protected by both federal and state laws. Strict laws that protect both the marine life and the quality of the water are enforced to protect state aquatic preserves, such as the Pine Island that is located in the Charlotte Harbor.
Southwest Florida does not seem like it would be paradise for fans of freshwater. In fact, Lake Trafford is one of only a few of the natural lakes in the region that are open to public, which makes it very popular. There are a few other lakes; however, these other lakes are all man-made lakes for either housing areas and/or golf courses. Most of these lakes are stocked with a wide assortment of fish for fishing including catfish, bass, and panfish. Unfortunately, because most of these lakes are usually found on private property, the fishing is normally restricted to members and guests.
Please do not confuse the lack of real lakes and restrictions on the manufactured ones with a shortage of places to freshwater fish in Florida. Fantastic fishing can be found in plenty of freshwater canals that offer fantastic fishing. Lehigh Acres, Golden Gate, and Cape Coral are the three largest canals. Panfish and bass are locally famous in certain parts of the canal systems. There are plenty of banks and bridges to fish from as well as boat ramps.
Overall, Florida fishing is wonderful for whatever it is your fishing needs require. Although it may look at times as if you will not find what you are looking for, sometimes, it is right there in front of you the entire time. Whereas most other states have an abundance of public lakes, Florida offers you areas to fish from in a slightly different and more exotic way. Florida fishing is fun for the fishing enthusiast of all levels and will sure to satisfy all your needs.
